A Great Médoc Renaissance
Ch. Ormes de Pez is one of the great châteaux of Saint-Estèphe. The 40-hectare property is situated in the northern Médoc, not far from Château Montrose and Château Cos d'Estournel, and it showcases the best of Saint-Estèphe's terroir.
But it wasn't always this way.
While it was classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 1932, Ormes de Pez struggled to maintain consistent quality for much of the 20th century—until the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages took over management in 1939. Since then, the wines have steadily improved to rank among the appellation's top performers.
At the château, the Cazes family changed only one thing: everything. They invested heavily in both the vineyards and winemaking facilities, focusing on precision viticulture and gentle extraction to showcase the estate's unique terroir.
Their dedication to quality is evident in both the vineyard and cellar. For the 2006 vintage, they crafted a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, aged in 45% new oak. Now showing nearly two decades of age, the 2006 Ch. Ormes de Pez is drinking beautifully. It should continue to evolve for another decade or more.
